Connie and Bill Earl opened The Mercantile for business on August 23, 1988

at 149 East Queen Street in  Pendleton, SC.

Over the years they were joined by two of their daughters; Terri Earl Brooks and

Cindy Earl Higgins, who both continue Connie’s dream today.

What began as a gift shop has evolved into a gift shop that also specializes in rubber stamping, paper arts and beading.  We still carry Gourmet Coffee Beans, Candles, Old Fashioned Candy, Toys, gifts and Greeting Cards.  Newer items include additional tabletop décor, hand crafted soaps and the return of gourmet food mixes. 

We also offer creative classes for all ages.

Summer Vacation

We are taking our vacation the first week of July.

The store will be closed from 

Sunday, June 30 through Thursday, July 4, 2013.

On Friday, July 5, the doors will open again at 10 AM 

and we will resume our regular schedule.

When we get back, we have a fun event planned for that weekend.

These are the 3 cards that will be featured in our April 21 card class with the ever-so-talented Nathalie Metivier from Magenta Rubber Stamps.

The class will be at 2 PM on Sunday, April 21, 2013 and the cost will be $45/student.  Please call today to reserve your space.  Reservations go on a first come/first served basis with priority given to those who pay up front.  (If you reserve a spot, the class is full and a paying customer would like to sign up, you will be notified and given a chance to pay.)

Happy New Year - 2013

It is that time of year when we are all recuperating from the busy end-of-the-year holiday craziness. 

We have gotten our class schedule partially finished, and I will post it here as soon as it is done.

The first class currently on the schedule is for Saturday morning, January 19 from 9 - 11.  Terri will introduce you to the world of making polymer clay beads and cabochons.  The cost of this class is $20 and includes all of your materials.

That afternoon, Mary will help you make Valentines with her own special flair.

The 26th, in the morning, Cindy will have a version of the Accordion Card just right for Spring.

As usual, our ever-popular Crafting A-La-Carte is available in a variety of daytime and evening time-frames.

What is Crafting A-La-Carte?  It is time we have set-aside for a class, but we do not schedule anything until someone reserves that time.  The first person to reserve the time chooses what the topic will be and any others that sign up will take that class as well.  We have over 200 classes we can teach, please check our website for a list of classes & descriptions.  If you wish to see a photo, please let us know and we can send you one, or you can stop by to see.  We do need 24 hour advance notice for the A-La-Carte classes so we may be prepared.  Please note that there may be a small number of classes that we cannot do on that short a notice because of special supplies needed.

Shop Hop Reminder

This should be LOADS of FUN!

Good morning fellow creative people!

We have so much fun planned for the Carolina Shop Hop!  Mary & Cindy are holding eClips demos and Make-n-Takes on Saturday.  (The two of them were both recently certified as eClips Instructors by Sizzix!)  The demos will be at 11:00 AM, 1:30 PM & 3:30 PM... the Make-n-Takes will be between the demos.  The demos will last about 15 - 20 minutes each so there will be plenty of time for you to play with eClips generated goodies!

Don't forget, we will be OPEN special hours on Sunday (10/21) from 1 - 4 PM!

The remainder of the Hop Terri, Cindy & Mary plan a variety of Make-n-Takes so that when you come back for your 2nd or 3rd (or 4th) visit, you will have a different Make-n-Take to enjoy.

There are prizes drawings for those who visit 8 or more shops as  well as those who visit all 11!  We have some FUN things up our sleeves and cannot wait to share with all of you!

My name is Mary Witter.  You might have seen me at The Mercantile from time to time.

I am a wife, a mother, a grandmother and now trying to learn to call myself an artist and teacher. I have been married since 1964 to my high school sweet heart, David. We have three children and 7 grandchildren. We both grew up in western Pennsylvania and have lived in North Carolina, California, New Jersey, Texas and currently (and hopefully finally) South Carolina. 

Rubber stamping has been a part of my life since 2001 when I first learned about Art Impressions stamps and “watercolor the Art Impressions way”.  Since then I have signed up for every class I could find that had anything to do with stamps and water color. I love working in various types of media and love altered books. Using the Art Impression stamps to create a watercolor scene makes me feel like an artist and gives such satisfying results and is so EASY!

Sharing what I have learned along the way is something I love to do. Creating something that gives satisfying results….something when it is finished you can’t wait to share with someone else.  They become little treasures and hopefully keepsakes.  Call the Mercantile (864-646-9431) and let me share with you how simple it is…..and have fun at the same time! Note:  Art Impressions watercolor class is being offered on Friday, September 28th at 10:30am.  Call the Mercantile to save your spot! We will do 3 images minimum.

Hanging Sign Post

Step 1.

Marvy Markers are used in the following 

water color project.

Ink stamp (G-4033 Charming Sign Post) with

#45 Sepia. Using a damp brush pull color out

of the lines to soften image.

Step 2.

Using Direct to Rubber technique color back of

stamp (E-3381 Small Hanging Basket) using #8,

#15, #20 and #100. Mist in the air and stamp.

Use clear stamps or if using wood mounted stamp 

use a positioner to hang basket from sign post. 

Soften with damp brush. Ink stamp (BB-2061 

small ivy) with #15 direct to rubber and mist before 

stamping multiple times around post.  Ink single 

flower (AA-3017 Daisy Bunch) and add to ivy.

Step 3.

Finish by making a green cloud of #15 and water 

on palette and applying with brush. Fill in with

(AAA-1374) teeny Tiny Grass. Sign your work.
