Connie in June 2011 at her granddaughter Karen's baby shower

The Mercantile family would like to thank our family, friends and customers for all your loving support and understanding as we have dealt with Connie’s illness over the past days, weeks and months.

Connie Earl - Wife, Mom, Sister, Aunt, Grandmother, Friend, Proprietor, Fighter, Survivor, and Loving Soul - lost her battle with cancer on Tuesday, July 12. The Mercantile was her dream and vision, a vision that has grown into reality over the past 23 years, and a store that has grown from a business to a welcoming place where customers became friends, and friends became like family.

The store and her vision will continue, and her vision and spirit have shaped much of what we do, but she will be greatly missed.

Visitation will take place at Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home in Central, SC on Thursday, July 14 from 6-8PM with a vigil service beginning at 6:15 PM.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, July 15 at 10:30 AM at Saint Andrews Catholic Church in Clemson.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the

Sock Knitting Class!

This is the tiny sock Margaret will teach in the class...

Class Comments: This is a three hour class!!

Class Description: Margaret is planning a sock class.  The cost of the class includes class, pattern, yarn.   Students will need to bring size 7 double pointed needles to class.   Please let The Mercantile know if you need size 7 double pointed needles - they can be ordered and are extra. (About $9.00 for a set of 5 bamboo) Learn to knit socks the old fashioned way - with double pointed needles!  We will make a mini sock during class that will teach students all the techniques needed for person sized socks. Students must know how to cast on, knit, purl and bind off.    Call the store today to reserve your spot!  There are only 3 spaces left.

Mary's Blog

I know, you are asking "Who is Mary?" Well, Mary is a wonderfully creative stamper who came to us looking for a place to teach some stamping techniques.  This occurred at about the same time that Mom & Dad were beginning to move more and more into retirement.  (NO, they have not left us yet, they always will be a presence at The Mercantile, after all, it was Mom's dream to open the store.)

Mary has a fun, bubbly personality, and tons of talent!  She is currently a member of the Art Impressions Design Team.

Help for a friend in need...

I am having difficulties posting the scanned poster...

Our friend Evin Evans of Split Creek Farms here in Pendleton is currently fighting for her life due to a fatal lung disease.  A double lung transplant is her only option.  She has bee accepted into the lung transplant programs at both Emory (Atlanta) and MUSC (Charleston).  She is struggling with massive medical expenses beyond what her insurance pays.  After surgery, her anti-rejection drugs will have to be taken for the rest of her life.

Evin's church has started the Evin's Lung Fund (ELF) account.  Anyone can make a tax-deductible contribution to help by writing a check to:

We are OPEN!

Yesterday, we closed about 4 PM, the chances of the roads starting to re-freeze made us decide to call it a day.  There were only a few other businesses open on the square... Vaqueros, The Islander, Olde Town Spirits, and The Mercantile.

The roads out there were not too bad in downtown.  And once the sun is out for a little bit this morning, they should improve even more.

*Crafting A-La-Carte:  Students can pick the time they would like to take the class and the topic.             Tuesdays or Thursdays daytime for 1 – 4 students          9:00 – 11:00AM or 2:00 – 4:00PM          Also available a series of Tuesday or Thursday evenings, 7:00 – 9:00, for 1 – 6 students          Check calendar for dates.             Classes available include beading, stamping and paper crafting classes.   Check store for our listing of over 200 classes.   Prices vary depending on the class (starting at $18 – all supplies included unless otherwise noted). 24 hour advanced notice required. The first person to reserve a date/time picks the topic. (Some dates have already been reserved.)
